LOS ANGELES: Often referred to as “Ballet on steroids,” Cardio Barre is the latest and greatest on the fitness scene. It’s basically the same set of warm-ups you did in ballet class, but at a much faster pace.
The classes are generally an hour long and consist of: 30 mins cardio, 10 mins arms, and 15 mins floor work, which includes abs, glutes, and thigh work, followed by a 5 min cool down.
I took a few classes to check it out for myself and I l-o-v-e, loved it! The classes are so fun, and based on the soreness of my quads, a good workout as well. The only drawbacks are that you have to get to the classes at least a half-hour early in order to get a good spot. Even so, the classes can get a little too crowded at the most popular times.
Unlike most gyms in L.A., Cardio Barre has a relaxed atmosphere, although it’s not unheard of to see a face you recognize. It’s not like Tae-bo though, where celebs are being escorted in and out and everyone’s dressed to impress. It’s a good mix of mostly women, from the used-to-be dancers and trendy moms, to high schoolers and college students.
No dance experience is required, but there are a couple of things you should know before heading in.
1) Take an intro class first; it’ll be easier for you to pick up the moves
2) Come early because the good spots fill up fast
3) Lastly, bring a towel because there’s a decent amount of floor work at the end of the class and you’ll want something to lie on
Oh yeah, one more thing, leave your ballet slippers at home. : ( I know, I was bummed too. Most people wear sneakers or just socks.
So go ahead and get your plies on!
Yours truly,
