A faithful reader recently wrote in and asked:

Is it too late to buy a pair of aviator sunglasses? I don’t want to get a pair right before they go out of style… The whole aviator fad is kinda over isn’t it? What do you think?

Au contraire, mon frère! Unless you’re bold enough to try round sunglasses, aviators and wayfarers are still the “it” shades.

Yes, they’re uber trendy, but don’t let that cramp your style. The wayfarer and the aviator are both legendary accessories, so wear ‘em with pride, even if teeny-boppers move onto something else. They’re both styles that have proved the test of time.

A couple interesting facts about the aviator and the wayfarer:

1. Both styles claim to be the “best-selling design” of sunglasses in history. (It’s hard to tell who’s being a shady character)

2. Both were originally made for and marketed to male pilots by Ray-Ban

3.  Despite initial marketing campaigns, both styles have reached “iconic” status thanks in part to Hollywood starlets

I hope that answers your question. The most important thing when buying sunglasses is how to make sure 1) they look good on your face 2) you’re comfortable wearing them.

Here are a few of my favorites this season…

aviatorpicks

From left to right: (Top row) Tom Ford’s Silvano Aviator Sunglasses $300, Marc by Marc Jacobs Basic Aviators $98, Heritage 1981 Metal Aviator Sunglasses $5.80, (Bottom row) Ray-Ban Rounded Aviator Sunglasses $129, Club Monaco Colored Metal Aviators $79, Simply Vera Vera Wang Aviator Sunglasses on sale now for $15.

wayfarerpick

From left to right: (Top row) Cape Town by Alex and Chloe $190, Kirra Cool Neon Sunglasses 2 for $20 or $15.50 Risky Business Sunglasses $11, (Bottom row) “Touchy” by Jee Vice $150, Miami Yellow by Rubber Duck Brand $90, 80’s Vintage Retro Blue Neon Wayfarer Sunglasses $11.

Again use this as a guide to help you get headed in the right direction, but base your ultimate decision on how they look with your face shape.

Until next time,
