Taking the stand: Faux reading glasses
Let’s start by reviewing the case: In the world of fashion, the word “faux” is almost always synonymous with “crime,” and in most cases, rightfully so. As with any crime, the severity of the offense can only be judged on a case by cases basis, however it’s probably safe to say that the worst offenses usually involve knock-off handbags and sunglasses. Chipping faux pearls come next.
That being said, there are a few items that escape this stigma. Faux fur for instance is now socially acceptable and even preferred in some circles. Quality costume pearls are also widely accepted, but what about faux reading glasses?
We’re not talking about faux “designer,” we’re talking about faux “prescription.” People who wear reading glasses with clear lenses in them just for the point of wearing them. Some noted motivations include: trying to look smarter, Mad Men-inspired, and a lame attempt to cover up a unibrow.
This trend gained momentum last fall after Michael Kors sent numerous pairs down his runway. And now designers like Jenni Kanye are keeping it alive by using them in their Fall 09 looks. (Refer to Exhibit A).
A number of suspecting, but unconfirmed celebs have also been spotted sporting the look. (Refer to Exhibit B)
And the biggest indicator of this trend: the stores carrying them. Faux specs are readily available at American Apparel, Fred Flare, and Urban Outfitters. (Refer to Exhibit C).

The question for The Pretty Committee isn’t so much whether the look is aesthetically pleasing, but whether posing as a geek is chic?
Posh Hippie: I think they can be really cute and don’t have a problem with the imitation factor at all. Hipsters have been wearing second-hand glasses for years, which pretty much foretold the resurgence of ’80s style glasses. (Those big ones, it’s worth noting, are not fake reading glasses). They are not trying to look smart but rather deliberately upping their geek-chic factor for the sake of irony. I think wearing non-prescription glasses that don’t shade the sun is just like wearing fake flowers or an outrageously large fake diamond- as long as you’re not truly trying to pass them off as real. They are more or less costume jewelry. Now, if I were to see someone adjusting them to read some poetry written in small text, that’s where I’d have to draw the line and consider the wearer guilty of a fashion/ life crime.
Trendspotter: I’m guilty. I used to wear fake reading glasses in college sometimes. They made me feel very serious and studious. What a nerd huh? The thing is when you’re wearing them all you can think about is the fact that you’re wearing glasses. You also turn into a sociologist and convince yourself that people are treating you differently because of them. The hard part comes when people notice them say, “I didn’t know you wear glasses.” Then you have to either lie or confess that you just like the way they look, which really perplexes some (spoken from experience). On a side note, I would never date a guy who wore fake glasses.
Lady Lex: Remember that scene in Legally Blonde, where Elle Woods is looking in front of the mirror on her first day of school and says, “I totally look the part.” Sometimes you do just want to look the part, nothing wrong with that. I think it’s totally fine as long as you’re not making it obvious that you’re wearing “fake” glasses. Otherwise, you’re just that person wearing fake glasses.
Jess: Sometimes a girl’s just gotta let loose. Dressing up like a geek is just another way to express your style. Instead of going for that classic polo or that leather jacket- to bring out the rocker in you, grab those “faux” prescription glasses and throw them on with a variety of outfits. I love the idea of the geek glasses because it is another outlet for style frenzy people to express themselves. They add flavor and fun. Steve Urkel would be proud. : )
Ashley: To be completely forthcoming, I’ve tried this look albeit 9 years ago. All that came out of it was a little nausea from the low grade glass filling my chic “smart-girl” glasses. I have no problem with this look though I can say from personal experience that you need a back story to the glasses, because inevitably people will wonder who the new sexy librarian is and very few people understand how glasses are a fashion statement when you don’t technically need them.
Left-tie: “Revenge of the Nerds” was only a movie. It is NOT chic to be geek. These glasses are ugly and the look is messy…and not messy in a good way. It’s like the glasses are being used as a distraction for bad hair. I’m talking to you Olsen twin. A thin to no frame lens would be MUCH better, way more sophisticated, and modern. But based on the evidence presented anyone who likes faux glasses is going fashion blind. In these tough economic times don’t spend your money on these. This is one accessory you do not need.
Verdict: Go ahead, get your geek on!
