Taking the stand: The Boyfriend Short

Let’s start by reviewing the case: Defendant look familiar? That’s because his older sibling, the Boyfriend Jean has been all the rage lately. And while technically the two are from the same jean pool, they are two very different individuals and must be judged as such.

It’s hard not to feel sorry for the little guy though… He’s gone through such great lengths to try and keep up, yet is constantly falling short.

But getting cut from the team is no excuse for a life of crime. Let’s take a look at some of his more questionable encounters.(Refer to Exhibit A)

Here are a few more cases to exam, the victims identities in these cases have been concealed. (Refer to Exhibit B) Some of these are tricky, it’s hard to tell who’s to blame, the defendant or his accessories?

Let’s get him alone before we make a judgment. (Exhibit C)

So, members of The Pretty Committee, give us the long and the short of it. Do boyfriend shorts make the cut or should they be kept out of reach?

left-tie3Left-Tie: I was a tween the last time boyfriend shorts were hot.  Madonna wore a pair with Sandra Bernhard on Letterman in 1988. Baby wore a pair in Dirty Dancing. We all know Madonna will try anything once and we haven’t heard from Sandra or Ms. Grey in a while.  My point….as an 11 year old I really really liked the look. But I was 11. At 32 I know better. If girls are going to wear denim shorts two words come to mind: daisy dukes. When it comes to boyfriend shorts…ladies you are better off single.

trendspotterthumb3Trendspotter: I know we’re discussing bf shorts here, but I need to get something of my chest… if your shorts are so short the pocket lining hangs out, they’re TOO short. Guh! Shorts like that really bug me… if bf shorts are the solution, so be it. Just be sure and follow Jess’ guide to wearing BF jeans, same rules apply, don’t wear baggy on top, etc.  I’m  kind of digging the casual low-key vibe of them. They do need to come down in price. $300 for shorts, COME ON!

ladylexinhamburgthumb3Lady Lex: My friend Matty D. calls my boyfriend jeans “Recession Jeans.” I wonder what he’s going to call boyfriend shorts? “Depression Jeans.” Ha Ha! Despite what he thinks, I’m all for them and boyfriend shorts, minus the heels and the leggings… It reminds me of Blossom from the 90’s. I think they’re cutest with sandals and maybe a cute flat. The most important thing to remember is that they’re an extremely casual jean so be mindful of where and when you wear them. Otherwise, enjoy the liberation of  baggy pants. I know I am!

jessbiopic70_704Jess: FUN, FUN, FUN.  I absolutely adore the boyfriend jean.  I have a pair of Genetic Denim shorts and they are so fun to style.  I feel so free and relaxed in them.  It doesn’t matter your size, height, or weight with this style, the boyfriend jean is something your can just slip on and go!! A+

ashley_cropped3Ashley: In certain cases I would put a big heart around the boyfriend short– it’s relaxed, so no awkward sausage thigh when you sit down. However, I have to say that what appears to be Barbie circa 1983 in Exhibit C might actually put me off of the boyfriend short forever – can that really be called a boyfriend short? Looks a little more like Jordache cut-offs…hmmm. I’m hung on this one, it’s really all about the design, wash and accessories.

daphnethumb3Daph: I’m not a fan of the boyfriend short. I think the reason they look good on the attached celebrity photos is because they are all wearing heels. These shorts sit awkwardly mid thigh and are tight at the rolled cuff. There either too tight or too baggy and are simply unflattering. They cut you the wrong way and if you are short, you’re doomed for disaster.

Verdict: While there are haters among us, majority rules in favor of the boyfriend short.

XOXO,
The Gals and Guy of INPT
