Taking the stand: Colored Denim

Let’s start by reviewing the case: We can’t say this trend comes as a total surprise. The fashion trade Women’s Wear Daily warned about it back in November 2008, (Refer to Exhibit A) but most blew it off, thinking the threat would never come to fruition, but low and behold… here it is. It’s like a flash back to the early 90’s when Kriss Kross made us wanna Jump, Jump!

It seems celebs (at least the paparazzi-driven ones) love this trend. (Refer to Exhibit B) And it appears retailers were banking on this trend really taking off, cause colored denim is everywhere and available at every price point. (Refer to Exhibit C)

Exam the Evidence:

What’s it going to be Pretty Committee…is colored denim making it’s way back in or should it silently fade away?

trendspotterthumb1Trendspotter: At first take, I was like “Oh no they didn’t!,” but then the colored denim grew on me. It’s like I put on my 80’s goggles again and we all know how dangerous that can get. If you’re going to sport colored denim, my advice is as follows: 1) wear it in a bright bold color, preferably in a dark red or purle (like Alba); pastels are a no-go in my book 2) only in a skinny or a straight leg, too much flare and you look like you belong on Austin Powers 3) Keep it simple and solid colored on top, you’re wearing colored denim for pete’s sake, that’s the main attraction folks.

ladylexinhamburgthumb1Lady Lex: I like them! They’re fun and cheerful, perfect for spring and summer. Not so cute in distressed denim. I would avoid any extra embellishments or bedazzling with this look, but overall these pants make me wanna JUMP JUMP, a-huh, a-huh.

jessonbeach1Jess: I definitely am in favor of this trend, but I am going to have to put some limits on it. Kylie Minogue looks a little ridiculous in that outfit.  I prefer to keep it casual with such a bold statement; she just has too much going on.  I like how Jessica Alba and Cameron Diaz rock the trend: simple and classy.  This is a trend for the younger generation, which will be very fun to play with for summer!

ashley_cropped2Ashley: I like– most of the time. The celebs featured are almost all wearing this trend perfectly. A) They weigh about ninety pounds and have gorgeous legs and B) They’re keeping it simple with a basic white or black tee. Where it goes wrong is with little miss minty green and her shredded jeans. Makes the butt and thighs look bigger than they are. I definitely suggest sticking with the bolder colors and skipping pastels all together. Overall, I approve.

left-tie1Left-tie: I kind of like it. It depends on the color though. Some are really cute…blues, reds, purples…others like a blinding shade of lime won’t do.  Denim to me is classic and you really can’t go wrong.  So as long as men don’t start wearing them these pants are a bright idea. Walk on!

Verdict: We’re cheering on this bold comeback!

XOXO,

I wore stuff like that at 20 in the 80’s.Kylie looks ridiculous.Hate her style of dressing, she is a slave to what is “in” whether it suits her five foot or not. She is almost 41 and then tries to look (with other forms of help too help) 22. Sad.Desperate. Tries far too hard.

I do not like this fashion one little bit.Nothing is original any more, it is either1980 or 1970 or 1940/50. Have they so run out of creative ideas that all the old is being recycled whilst anyone over 35 can remember wearing it all when teenagers. ??

I had no idea Kylie was 41, far too old to be wearing anything this bright. I agree with you there. This trend should definitely be reserved for those in the younger more avant-garde crowd.
And Yes, the fashion world could use some “fresh” ideas.
