If you read my post yesterday, then you’re fully aware of all the buzz around red lipstick lately. It’s a trend you can expect to see more of this coming spring.
I hope I didn’t scare anyone away from trying out this trend by saying red lipstick is best left to those who know what they’re doing. Just to clarify, I think red lipstick can be stunning and very glamorous when worn correctly. And let’s not kid ourselves, it’s a high maintenance look.
I’m excited to see it stick around through spring though, because I think it’s a great alternative to the neutrals we’re used to seeing around this time of year.
I also did a little field research yesterday and discovered there are WAY more options out there than I thought. With all the stains, tints, glosses and sheers available, everyone should be able to find a flattering shade if they’re willing to do the leg work.
The most fool-proof option to this trend is tinted lip balm. I tried on Bobbi Brown’s tinted lip balm in Rose Petal and it’s safe enough for everyday use. BTW, according to the Bobbi Brown website, it was featured in “Allure” magazine as a best-seller of 2008.
For something more than a balm, but less than a lipstick, try a stain or a sheer. I’ve heard rave reviews about Stila’s Cherry Crush lip and cheek stain.
If you’re looking to go all the way and really make a statement, here are some general guidelines to help you find that perfect shade of red lipstick.
1. Pick a shade based on your complexion, not on what’s new (be wary of pushy sales people)
2. If you have a fair complexion, something with blue undertones generally works best
3. If you have more color in your skin, opt for something with warmer undertones, like orange or yellow
It can be a jungle out there, so be prepared to try a few shades on before making a purchase. I really like the selection of red shades available at MAC, and although I’ve never tried it, I’ve heard great things about Red Sinner from Poppy King’s Lipstick Queen collection.
If you have a tried and true favorite, please write in (trendspotter@ineedprettythings.com) and share with the rest of us.
Oh yeah, one more thing to remember before you buy, there was a study that came out a year or so ago warning against high levels of lead in some red lipsticks. Yikes!
You can check out which brands the study included at www.safecosmetics.org.
Until next time,
