Did anyone see Elle’s beauty director on the Today Show last Tuesday (February 17)?
If you did then you understand why this post could have been titled– “Spotted: Elle’s Guide to Disastrous Hair”

I know she’s a beauty expert and works for Elle and all, but um, these styles suck. I respect that she didn’t recommend $90 styling products during these penny pinching times, but cutting up pantyhose to make a headband (one of her suggestions) is ridiculous and so is this third style.

Knowing there had to be more to look forward to, I went to talk with one of L.A.’s most sought-after hair stylists, J.R. D’Angeles. His coifs have appeared on the runways of Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows and every red-carpet event imaginable. Accolades aside, what impresses me most about this veteran hairstylist is his devotion to the craft.

He travels the world searching for the most cutting-edge trends and products, no pun intended, and is known amongst his peers for his innovative techniques. If anyone could provide a little inspiration during these doubtful times, this is the man.
What are your must-have products?
Right now, it’s the whole Redken’s Real Control line, most especially the conditioner. Another great product– Pravana’s Super Shape hair spray, by far one of the best. For curly hair, I love Paul Mitchell’s Flexible Style Hair Sculpting Lotion because it doesn’t flake. Aquage’s Straightening Ultra Gel is great for straight hair because it’s an anti-humiditant [it keeps moisture out].
Any new products receiving a lot of buzz?
Redken just came out with a product this year called Blown Away and it helps protect your hair from the heat of blow drying. Also, Logics Color DNA System leave-in conditioner is very hot right now.
What are some of the cuts we’ll be seeing this spring?
Shorter hair is going to be popular. Keeping the cut very simple, longer on the top and shorter underneath like Rihanna and Victoria Beckham. They are dictating that look right now. Women are going shorter and men are going longer, with hair covering their ears and face. It’s that Nouveau 70’s shag look that Mrs. Brady from the Brady Bunch used to wear but funkier. Long big hair for girls is also going to be in like we saw in the 80’s.
What about in hair color?
Everyone has been going darker I think due to the economy. A lot of blondes were just grabbing bottles and going dark, which they can’t do, they turn orange. I’m slowly starting to see that trend go away, I think due to the weather. People always tend to go lighter in the summer, darker in the winter.

What about styling trends, anything new for spring?
The days of flat flat flat are gone. We’re going to see much more texture and movement in the hair. You’re going to see more waves, thermal waves, which are created by using multi-sized curling irons. When you use two different sized irons or even three, it gives your hair a lot of texture and the look is more natural less “done,” sort of a controlled mess. You want a woman who doesn’t look like they’ve spent hours getting ready, when ironically in fact, they have. There’s a new type of crimping iron too. It’s not like the traditional crimper we used back in the day. It’s a new wave and it works particularly well on fine hair in need of volume. We should be seeing it over the summer or by the end of the year.
See Ladies, spring isn’t looking so gloomy after all. I’m glad we avoided what could have been a hairy situation. If you know of any other good styling tips for spring, email me at LadyLex@ineedprettythings.com. Anything is better than the two front braids. Ha Ha!
Yours Truly,
Lady Lex
