I made it home! There was no clicking of sparkly ruby heels, no house whirling in the sky, and no barking dogs, just a 13 hour plane ride and plop! I was back on American soil. Woohoo!
America has hit me like a brick, but at least my wardrobe finally makes sense again. As I throw on my skinny jeans, North Face raincoat and cons and reach for my chunky earrings and eyeliner, I can only wonder what’s busting out of Japan at the moment.
Here are some of my favorite Japanese looks that always brought a smile to my face:
Outfits that are fashionable, but always functional. Those socks are just what that outfit needed!

The craziest kicks I’ve ever seen and in plenty.

Bright colors, cute couples.

Outfits with a sense of humor– that work.

Androgynous looks that maintain rounded edges of cuteness.

The never-ending parade of cellphone dangles!

Yukatas worn by women and men of leisure

Yukatas are mostly worn in summer at festivals. There are a variety of styles both casual and traditional, but even the traditional garments are evolving. The younger girls want ones that have shimmer on them and I even spotted some knee-length ones. They’re all the rage with the pre-teens, by my Japanese father forbid them in his house (they aren’t traditional!). Some things are universal.
Though I had 379 days to tackle the detail and philosophies behind fashion in Japan, I know it is something bigger than myself. I will continue to consider their style and apply it wherever possible. As I settle back into my home in Portland, (be ready to see some Portland style/decor coming soon) I leave Japan with feelings of love, humility and of course– cellphone dangles.

Kawaii Kid,
Welcome home! I’m gonna miss seeing the fantastic trends in Japan, but we’re glad to have you back.
Welcome back. And don’t forget you promised to throw a bacon party.
The Japanese are so original! I love their fashions and if it wasn’t for the fact that here, on American turff, I might stand out a bit… I would explore some of it. Haha. What a great experience this must have been for you!
Thanks guys! It’s so great to be back. Japan is too many words. I encourage everyone to try it on sometime.
