Spring ‘09 Runway Trend

I’ve noticed the Safari look has successfully made it’s way from the spring runways into stores for a second straight year. I spotted safari-inspired pieces all over the place this weekend from a wide range of designers, including Michael Kors, Joie, and James Perse.

Personally, I really dig this classy and timeless style. It’s adventurous and fun, yet grounded and exotic.

It’s a great look to invest in because you know you’ll be able to wear it for more than just one season. So if you’re looking for a classic safari shirt/shirtdress or a jacket, this is a great time to get it.

The difference between this spring’s safari-inspired looks and last year’s is in the details.  Last year, the details were in the fringe and the wood beading.  This year, it’s all about animal prints, like leopard and zebra on really delicate fabrics and python skin for shoes and handbags. Overall, the look is a little more luxurious this year.

Donna Karen, Oscar de la Renta, and Louis Vuitton also sent safari ensembles down their spring runways.

As far as what’s in stores now, here are a few of the  stand-out pieces I’ve seen.

1) Helen Kaminski Women’s Mischa Organdy Hat, Bloomingdales, $80. 2) Contrast Panel Shirt, James Perse Los Angeles, $144. 3) Shiny Safari Shirtdress, Karen Millen, $224. 4) Tom Ford Hunter Shiny Rose Gold Aviator Sunglasses, Amazon, $293. 5) Safari print scarf, Brooks Brothers, $114. 6) Leopard print top, Rebecca Taylor at Shopbop, $150. 7) Safari bangle, Forever21, $6.80. 8) Emmett Trunks Set of 2, Target, $300. 9) Safari-VooDoo inspired sandal, TopShop, $145.

Of course the very best accessory for this look is a beautiful tan. Counting down the days until I can start working on mine.

Until next time,

I love everything with the safari look and I even own a true safari hat (straw pith helmet which is hard sand colored) which I purchased on a private game reserve in South Africa but which was manufactured in South Carolina. I need to give you the manufacturer’s name when I find my hat.

    Dear Trendspotter,
I loved your article “Safari Chic Gear” as well as the pieces you highlighted.
Can you please tell me where I can get #2 and #3; unfortunately, the article
did not state their source.  I love those two safari chic items and would really
like to find them.  Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Candice
