How to Stop Hair Breakage

I was experiencing a lot of breakage recently despite my diligent efforts (weekly deep conditions) to keep my hair well moisturized and healthy. I must confess I’m a hot iron junkie, but I wasn’t using my hot iron any more than usual so I wasn’t sure what to attribute it to, but I knew I had to do something about it.

I went to this awesome beauty supply called Naimie’s in Los Angeles.  This place is like crack for beauty junkies. (It’s where all of Hollywood’s hair and make-up stylists shop.) I knew if there was something out there that could help, this was where I was going to find it. (Unfortunately, Namie’s website doesn’t really do the store justice)

When I walked upstairs, I saw aisles and aisles of conditioners, all claiming to give me smooth beautiful hair. Before I knew it I was drowning in conditioner bottles , all claiming to leave me with smooth sleek hair.  Thank goodness a salesperson saved me by asking if I needed help. “YES!,” I said.

I explained to her my situation and asked for a recommendation.  She said a very common mistake people in my situation make is to load up on moisturizing products.

She said if you’re experiencing breakage you need to pack your hair with protein first (not moisture) to strengthen it.  Once you start seeing less breakage, then you can start with the moisturizing products again.

I verified this information with my hairstylist, J.R. Dupitas. He confirmed everything she said, which was good cause I’d already bought the product she recommended: Redken’s Extreme Deep Fuel.

So far, it has made a huge impact on my hair. Not nearly as much breakage. For even more protection against breakage, J.R. recommends Redken’s Extreme Anti-snap (which is a leave-in conditioner) for everyday use.

If you have any other great products or recommendations to fight against breakage, please share, after all that’s what INPT is all about.

Yours truly,

Lady Lex

P.S. Namie’s no longer sells Deep Fuel, but it’s available online here and here.
