After years of trial and error, you’ve finally found that perfect shade of lipstick/eyeshadow/blush. You never thought a lipstick could add pep to your step until you found this shade. Finally, things are starting to make sense.
Until that one fateful day when you go to replenish your stocks and discover the shade’s been discontinued. “WHY?,” you frantically ask the innocent saleswoman hoping she’ll say something to pacify your fury. But she doesn’t and you end up storming out. We’ve all been there.
While some of us quietly build a bridge and get over our lost loves, others of us want answers. Like Jan Maggi of Tenafly, N.J. When her favorite lipstick shade was discontinued she called the brand’s headquarters to see if they had any leftovers laying around that she could purchase.
“Of course they said no,” she says. “They suggested I try the replacement shade, which I did. It was called salmon. It was similar, but it wasn’t the same and I didn’t like it.”
After searching for the shade online, Maggi stumbled upon Three Custom Color Specialists, a company that specializes in recreating discontinued shades and custom blends.

The company has a list of over 5,000 discontinued shades they’ve already recreated. If the color you want isn’t on the list, don’t fret– They can still help. All you have to do is send in a dime size sample and they analyze the shade for color, texture and coverage and then recreate it for you.
Maggi sent in a sample of her lost shade and says she was very happy with the results.
Another perk– once you send a sample, the company keeps a file on the shade they’ve recreated for you, so reordering is a breeze.
Until next time,
