I know Valentine’s Day has come and gone, but I’ve been wanting to share this project with all of you for quite some time, so I say go ahead and spread the love throughout the year with these adorable bath bomb cupcakes.

For this project, we ordered Bramble Berry’s Bath Bomb Cupcake Kit for $35.99.

FYI: By ordering this kit, you are committing to making 6 blue cupcakes with pink frosting.

Here’s what’s included in the kit:

IMG_2731

1 cup Citric Acid

6 oz. Witch Hazel in a spray bottle

1 oz. Cream Cheese Frosting fragrance

10 ml Cornflower Blue LaBomb (dye/coloring drops for cake part)

1 Cupcake Silicone mold (+ 6 liners)

2 droppers

10 ml Fuchsia Diluted LabColor (dye/coloring drops for frosting)

1/2 cup Meringue Powder

1 cup Sodium Laurel Sulfate or SLS

4 Tablespoons Jojoba Oil

1 Plastic decorating bag and star tip

Iridescent glitter (we didn’t use this)

Here’s what the kit/website says you need to provide:  1 pound Baking Soda, **really you need two boxes or 2 cups worth** warm water, and 1 teaspoon of Cream of Tartar (optional).

You will also need: A bag of powdered sugar for the frosting. Yeah, they forget to mention this! An electric mixer and a spatula.

Supplies: It was an impulse buy. **If you want, you can explain how most of the supplies can be purchased individually, but in my opinion it’s worth purchasing the fragrances and the coloring agents from Bramble Berry.**

In addition to the above mentioned kit, we also purchased this kit from Bake It Pretty, basically we just wanted to include them in the story somehow. : )

Procedure:

Step 1: Line your silicone mold with Pretty cupcake liners like these.

Step 2: Mix the Citric Acid and the Baking soda in a medium sized bowl with your hands. Just dig right in there and get your hands dirty. You’re going to want to break up any clumps until the mixture is nice and smooth.

Step 3: Pour in the fragrance.  If you’re using the kit, you’re going to want to use about 3/4 of the bottle labeled Cream Cheese Frosting. If you’re not using the kit, you’re going to want to use about  1.5 tablespoons of whatever fragrance you choose. (I guess this depends on how strong it is too?)

Step 4: Add 7-10 drops of your coloring agent. (less if you want lighter) It should look like this:

Step 5: Dig in mixing the color and fragrance thoroughly. At this point, it smells good enough to eat, but don’t try, you’ll be thoroughly disappointed.

Step 6: The instructions included in the kit say to then spray the mixture with 6 squirts of Witch Hazel and mix in until the mixture begins to clump together and hold its shape.  Not sure what went wrong here, but it took us about 16 squirts of Witch Hazel before the mixture was ready to be put into the mold.

Here’s what it looks like when it’s ready to be molded:

Step 7: Mold the mixture into your cupcake liners. We spent quite a bit of time debating whether or not to make the base rounded on top or flat. In the end, we opt. for what looked “most real.” (Be sure and read Part II of this tutorial where we’ll explain why making them look “real” presented some challenges in the frosting dept.)

Until next time,

@leslie They are fun to make, but the not having to bake might be the best part. Especially if you make them in the summer to give away as bridesmaid gifts or something like that. This is one of those things that is only economical if you are making a bunch of them. But it’s a lot of fun and your house will smell good for days.
