We brush our hair, we brush our teeth, we even brush our brows, so why not our bodies? Could I be going too far? Au contraire!

Turns out brushing your body with a dry body brush before you get into the shower has many benefits, besides just feeling good.
Your skin is your body’s biggest detoxification organ, so it’s important to aid it in optimal functioning. You can do this by exfoliating the dead skin cells off with a dry brush so that sweat and toxins can easily exit your body.
I also recently learned that dry brushing can reduce the appearance of cellulite because it’s actually the toxins in fat that give it that cottage cheese look. Yuck!
Another great benefit to dry brushing is that it stimulates your lymphatic system. To learn more about your lymphatic system, go here.
Oh and don’t forget the most obvious benefit to dry brushing— oh-so soft skin!
How to use the brush:
You want to start from your feet and brush in an upward motion towards your heart. Then move to your fingertips and brush inward towards your shoulders. Just be sure to use the brush before you get into the shower, hence why it’s called a dry brush but it’s really so you can wash away all the icky stuff. Here’s a video from Smart Yogini:
You’ll want to try and dry brush once a day.
What to use:
When looking for a dry brush you want to make sure the bristles are all natural. Sisal makes good ones. The synthetic bristles can cause damage to the skin and let’s be real you don’t want to be detoxing your skin with something synthetically made.
How to clean:
You can clean your body brush with some soap and water about once a month or more and then just air dry.
Just keep brushing and let me know how it goes!

Funny, thinking about this on the way to work. Sophie from gorgeously green is a big advocate of this. She says a lot of women in Europe start doing this at a young age, and therefore tend to have less cellulite than Americans. I bought a sisal brush for this purpose, but a rarely use it since I use loofahs or exfoliating wash cloths in the shower. I need to try doing it regularly to see what happens.
I’ve been doing it regularly and have felt and seen a big difference in my legs. I definitely recommend this helpful habit. Let me know how it goes.
