A Shoe Love Story

I was walking through Bloomingdale’s the other day when I spotted these adorable python print ballet flats. And in case you haven’t heard, python skin is IN my friend!

I especially love them in all black; they remind me of grown-up ruby slippers. : )

When I saw the name Sam Edelman on them, I had a quick flash back to the late 1980’s. Remember those crazily popular Sam & Libby leather flats that EVERYONE had? You know the ones with the bows on the tip? C’mon don’t pretend you didn’t own a pair or two. This isn’t an exact match, but it should help jog your memory.

C’mon, we all had ‘em. Well it turns out, it’s the same Sam! He and his wife, Libby, founded “Sam & Libby” back in 1987. Then, after what I’m guessing was some enormous success, they sold the brand to Maxwell Shoe in 1996 to pursue other endeavors.

After a couple of years restoring an 18th century farmhouse, (according to an article in Forbes) the Edelmans decided to try their hand at footwear again and founded Sam Edelman Shoes in 2004. I think shoes may be their true calling, just a hunch.

While researching this article, I learned the couple actually fell in love at a 1979 shoe fair. A New York Times article from Oct. 1989 says, “He was there as a salesman for his father’s business, she as [a] footwear fashion editor for Seventeen magazine. Now that’s a match made in shoe heaven!

Until next time,
